“Over the last decades, the area of oat cultivation in the Mediterranean rim almost equalled that of northern Europe, but yields remained nearly three-fold lower. It is necessary to breed oats for Mediterranean environments where they face hot, dry weather and virulent pathogens. Genetic diversity, selection tools and knowledge of the biological processes are key elements to achieve this aim successfully.”
